We had natural gas at our last home. I barely thought about it — the bill came every month, the stove worked, the water was hot. It was infrastructure in the background.

Then we had our current home built on a rural lot where natural gas service was not available. Suddenly we were on propane: a 250-gallon tank in the yard, deliveries to schedule, a gauge to monitor. The experience of actually switching from one to the other gave me a different perspective on this comparison than someone who has only ever had one or the other.

For most rural homeowners, the propane vs. natural gas question is not actually a choice — it is a clarification. If gas lines do not run to your property, the decision is already made. But if you are close enough to a gas main that connection is theoretically possible, or you are building and weighing your options, here is what the comparison actually looks like from someone who has lived on both sides of it.

The Fundamental Difference

Natural gas and propane are both hydrocarbon fuels that burn cleanly and work in similar appliances. The core difference is delivery:

Natural gas is piped to your home continuously through a utility’s underground distribution system. You pay for what you use, monthly, with no storage or delivery required. The supply is effectively unlimited and does not need to be monitored.

Propane is stored in a tank on your property and delivered by truck when your level drops low. You manage the storage, monitor the level, and arrange deliveries. The supply is finite — run out and you have no heat until the truck shows up.

Everything else in this comparison flows from that difference.

Cost

This is the most complicated part of the comparison because fuel costs fluctuate, vary significantly by region, and depend on how you buy.

As a general rule, propane costs more per BTU than natural gas. This has been consistently true over time, though the gap narrows and widens depending on market conditions.

A rough comparison using recent average prices: natural gas runs approximately $10 to $15 per million BTU in many markets. Propane runs approximately $20 to $35 per million BTU depending on your region and supplier. At those ranges, a home that spends $1,500 per year on natural gas heating might spend $2,500 to $3,500 on propane for equivalent heat output — before accounting for appliance efficiency differences.

But the connection cost matters. Running a natural gas line to a property that does not currently have service involves trenching, pipe, metering, and the utility’s own connection fee. Depending on the distance to the nearest main and local utility practices, this can run from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands. If you are 500 feet from a gas main, the economics look different than if you are 50 feet away.

Ask the local gas utility for a formal extension estimate before assuming natural gas is financially advantageous.

And propane suppliers are negotiable. Unlike a utility monopoly, you can shop propane suppliers, switch, and negotiate. A homeowner who pays attention to their propane rate and is willing to make a call occasionally will often do better than one who passively accepts whatever rate their supplier charges.

Efficiency

Propane has a higher energy density than natural gas. One cubic foot of propane contains about 2,500 BTU. One cubic foot of natural gas contains about 1,000 BTU. Propane delivers roughly 2.5 times the energy per unit volume.

In practice, this means propane appliances are sized and calibrated differently than natural gas appliances. A propane furnace and a natural gas furnace of the same BTU output perform similarly — the difference is in how much fuel they consume by volume, not in how they heat your home.

High-efficiency appliances narrow the cost gap. A 96% AFUE propane furnace wastes very little fuel. The per-BTU cost advantage of natural gas is partially offset by extracting more of the available energy from each unit of propane. If you are on propane and upgrading appliances, efficiency matters more — not less — than on a cheaper fuel.

Convenience and Supply Security

Natural gas wins on convenience, clearly. Having lived with it, I can tell you what you do not think about: anything. The supply does not run out. There is no tank to monitor, no deliveries to schedule, no risk of running dry before the truck arrives. It just works, invisibly, every time.

Propane requires more attention. You need to monitor your level, stay ahead of deliveries (especially in winter when demand spikes and delivery windows stretch), and accept the risk — however manageable — of running low if life gets busy and you let it go too long.

But natural gas has its own supply vulnerabilities. Utility supply disruptions — infrastructure failures, extreme cold snapping demand beyond pipeline capacity, regional shortages — affect natural gas customers. In the 2021 Texas winter storm, natural gas supply failures were widespread. Propane customers with full tanks were unaffected. A large propane tank represents a buffer of supply stored on your property that no utility disruption can touch.

For many rural homeowners, that independence is part of the appeal of being off-grid systems generally — not a bug, but a feature.

Appliance Compatibility

Most gas appliances are designed for either natural gas or propane and can often be converted between them using a conversion kit. Converting involves swapping the orifice (the small fitting that controls gas flow) and sometimes the regulator. It is a straightforward process for a licensed technician and costs $50 to $150 per appliance in labor.

If you are moving from a property with natural gas appliances to a propane home — or vice versa — do not assume the appliances transfer directly. Have a technician verify and convert them before use.

Environmental Comparison

Both fuels are fossil fuels and produce carbon dioxide when burned. Propane produces slightly less CO₂ per BTU than natural gas, making it marginally cleaner from a carbon perspective — though the practical difference is small.

Natural gas distribution systems have a methane leakage problem. Methane — the primary component of natural gas — is a potent greenhouse gas, and leaks from pipelines, fittings, and distribution infrastructure add to the climate impact of natural gas in ways that are not fully reflected in a simple combustion comparison.

Neither fuel is zero-carbon. If this matters to you, the long-term trajectory for rural homes involves high-efficiency heat pumps or other electric options — not a natural gas connection.

The Rural Homeowner’s Practical Answer

If you are deep enough into a rural area that natural gas is not available: you are on propane (or another alternative) and the comparison is moot. Learn to manage propane well, shop your supplier, stay ahead of deliveries, and invest in high-efficiency appliances. You are paying more per BTU than urban neighbors on natural gas — offset it with efficiency and attention.

If you are on the edge of a service area and could connect to natural gas: get a real extension cost estimate from your utility. Run the math on connection cost versus fuel cost savings over 10 years. Do not assume it is a better deal without checking the numbers for your specific situation.

If you are building new in an area where natural gas is available: propane offers independence and somewhat comparable performance with the right appliances; natural gas offers lower fuel cost and no delivery management. Either can be the right answer depending on your priorities.

What almost never makes sense: converting from propane to natural gas if it requires significant infrastructure cost, only to save a moderate amount on fuel annually. The payback on a $10,000 connection in fuel savings alone can stretch to 20 years or more.

The Honest Bottom Line

Natural gas is cheaper per BTU in most markets and more convenient. Propane is more independent, widely available, and manageable with the right habits and appliances.

For rural homeowners who do not have a natural gas option, propane is not a compromise — it is the right tool for the situation. Managing it well costs you some attention but gives you energy independence that utility customers do not have.
